Supporting a loved one who has lost a child

" To lose a child is to lose a piece of yourself"
Dr. Burton Grebin

No parent should ever experience the loss of a child yet many parents do every day. It happens through accidents, illnesses, overdoses, miscarriages and even murder. No one way is better than another.

When it occurs, many of us friends want to be there and we want to say the right thing but nothing comes out quite right. To be honest most things we say to bring comfort comes out wrong. The only thing we can do is to pray for peace and understanding for all involved. Those parents may not hear the prayers but I know from my friends who have lost a child they felt those during each day and night.

The holiday's are some of the hardest parts of each passing year with the firsts being the absolute worst of all. My friends who have lost a child went through periods of wanting to reminiscence about the memories of Christmas's past but there are others, especially when it is time to close their eyes and say prayers, that the feeling of loss becomes overwhelming. This is when the loved ones need our prayers the most.

If you have a friend who is going through this loss today let them tell as many stories as they want, laugh with them at the funny memories, cry with them when the loss comes back and hold them when they can no longer hold themselves up. They will never remember what you said during this time but they will always remember your love, time and patience.

There are no words to express how you feel on the inside so Sisters by Design has created some gifts that will help convey the messages within your heart to your loved one.

Loss of a child/young person impacts all around including family and friends.
Just as love ripples like rain drops in an ocean so does the grief of loss.

One of the traditions our family has done since losing a loved one who was not our biological child but someone we loved deeply is instead of an Angel at the top of our Christmas tree we have her picture in a ornament frame. It has been 10 years now but every year my kids look forward to putting our Angel "Samantha" at the top of our tree.

The years may pass but the love never fades.

"The Lord bless thee and keep thee:
The Lord make his light shine  upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The Lord life up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace."
Numbers 6:24-26 KJV

Merry Christmas
